2nd Floor Rear is a 24-hour festival of alternative spaces, apartment galleries, and ephemeral and migrant projects celebrating Chicago's vibrant community of alternative and DIY art spaces.

In 1980, the Neoists, a little-known avant-garde subculture descended from Flux
us, held their first annual "International Neoist Apartment Festival" or APT, a four-day long event complete with concerts, performances, film screenings, and installations, in the apartment of one of the members of the Neoist group. Poorly documented and marginally historicized, it is thought that APT carried on annually, in various iterations, until 1988.

Drawing on the 24-hour block party model (think Chattanooga, Tennessee's Mainx24 festival), 2nd Floor Rear adapts the spirit of APT to a condensed, 24-hour timeline. From noon on February 4th to noon on February 5th, festival participants such as Pop-up Art Loop, Carousel Space Projects, the Happy Collaborationists, and individual artists will host pop-up exhibitions, dream yoga sleepovers, site-specific installations, performances, late-night studio square dancing, a PJ party brunch, and more. Get your art party on for the whole 24-hour cycle (like a champ!) or pick and choose your events.

WE'RE BAAAACK! Come to the Hyde Park Art Center for this artist-inspired weekend celebrating tricksters, pranksters, tomfools, and rebels.

The Hyde Park Art Center is proud to present the second installment of Mischief Night, a free festival of artist-made mischief. On October 29, from 1-10pm the community is invited to enjoy mischief themed workshops, performances, exhibitions, and events for all ages.

Last year Mischief Night brought over 500 people to the Art Center for nine hours of artist-made mischief. This years program promises to be even bigger and better. Scheduled events include: an artist-made haunted house in the Art Center parking lot; a reception for the exhibition Blaque Lyte, curated by artists Chris Kerr and Paul Nudd, featuring artworks that react to ultraviolet light; a continuation of the dance performance Story Burn performed by Heather Hartley and Casey Murtaugh of the Chicago Dancemakers Forum. Children and families are encouraged to participate in art making activities, as well as trick-or-treating taking place from 1-5pm. The night will wrap up with a party in the Art Center's first floor gallery space.

Autumn Hays's work will be part of
3pm-8pm
Step into the parking lot. This year, the Art Center's parking lot will be transformed into a haunted house that will shake you to your core. Each artist curated scene, sponsored by Smartbox, features ghouls and gross outs of every shape and size. The further into the lot you go, the more horrifying things become.

Mischief Night 2011 is generously sponsored by Chicago Public Media and Smartbox. This event is free and open to the general public.

Scott Gengelbach has curated a show of 18 artists whose art confronts war and the military industrial system. The show ranges in works from painting, sculpture, installation, video and performance art. Many of the works are created from multimedia and mixed media sources. All of them display visual narratives that construct and unveil humanities ties to war and the affects created in result.
